Why live in Geelong? We’ll tell you why

25 September 2021

Geelong is the gateway to the great ocean road. With the Bellerine Peninsula on the outskirts, it has a great blend of history with a modern twist. Take a look at just a few things we think are great about our beautiful home town, Geelong.

GEELONG WATERFRONT

Geelong is Victoria’s second largest city. It is home to more than 150,000 residents. It was settled back in the 1800s, and dominated by grand architecture. Geelong’s waterfront boasts some of the most amazing seafood restaurants. Take in the view at well renowned Fishermens Pier, then after dining take a stroll along the Promenade walk.

There is always something happening along the waterfront, family bbqs, markets, helicopter rides, train rides for the kids, whatever your pace you can find an activity to suit your needs.

SIMONDS STADIUM

Formerly known as Kardinia Park, Shell Stadium, Baytec Stadium & Skilled Stadium, Simonds Stadium has been Geelong’s home ground for the past 60 years. Simonds Stadium is Victoria’s only venue for AFL Premiership matches outside Melbourne, and was built way back in 1941.

With recent upgrades it is fast becoming one of the best venues to watch sport. Geelong loves it’s football, and that vibes reinstates throughout the town. Why not jump on the bandwagon and support the cats!

BELLS BEACH

With an international reputation as one of Australia’s best surf beaches, Bells Beach is a breathtaking spot, in or out of the water and home to the The Rip Curl Pro, the longest running professional surfing contest in the world.

There are several surfing spots in the precinct from Southside to Steps Reef. To get to Bells Beach, travel along the Great Ocean Road past Jan Juc, turn left into Bells Boulevard and follow the signs. One of the meccas of surfing and well worth a visit, if only to view the beach and surf from the lookouts.

WINE TOURS & TASTINGS

Experience the Geelong wine region on a tailored tour. Charters and private tours are available for day trips, special occasions, events and festivals. The new Bellerine Taste Trail is fast becoming the Bellarine region’s top destination for foodies and wine lovers. Geelong is spoilt for choice with some of the best wineries right at our door step.

You will never be short of wine being at the doorstep of some of the best wineries in Victoria.

GEELONG BOTANIC GARDENS

One of Geelong’s best kept secrets. Displaying one of the most amazing plant collections, these gardens will stimulate your senses with an array of scents and colours. Established over a century and a half ago the Geelong Botanic Gardens has a fascinating history and recognised heritage value.

An exposed site of 200 acres with the bay frontage, it has transformed during the past 150 years to become Eastern Park and the Geelong Botanic Gardens. It is a wonderful setting to host special occasions such as weddings, or other celebrations.

GEELONG POWERHOUSE

Powerhouse Geelong is a ground breaking project and industrial street art space, located in North Geelong. The power station in 40 Mackey St has been empty since it was abandoned 45 years ago. The art space includes a 3000m² building, sits on 6 acres of land and is Australia’s largest indoor legal space to create ephemeral street art. The curator of this exciting project is Ian Ballis.

Geelong is also becoming a mecca for artists, Powerhouse is just one example of this, and a big one at that! You are sure to be blown away by this amazing raw display.
